10 intermediate ways to speed up windows

here is one of the better guides to help speed up your windows machine that i’ve run across in some time now. the first step involves turning off certain services, and i would be careful when turning off the ones recommended. chances are you won’t need them, but always double check first. read this guide for a definition of each service before you turn any off. there are also a couple of steps where you need to edit the registry. if you aren’t comfortable making these changes, i wouldn’t recommend doing it. if you do make any changes, make sure to backup your registry first.

windows auto-restart fix

one thing that annoys me about windows is it’s auto-restart after a windows update. i would like to decide when to restart my machine, not ms. here is a registry fix to prevent windows from restarting on its own after an update. just download the file, and run it.

RemoteDesktopSearch BETA is a FREE service that makes it possible to remotely access all of the information indexed by Google Desktop anywhere in the world.” i haven’t tried it out myself, but it looks like it could be promising.

if you want to add custom images to your ipod or powerbook, then etchamac.com is the place for you. they use a co2 laser to etch any image or text onto the ipod or powerbook. from their samples, their work looks really good.

terminal services command line administration

here is a nice write up about how to use the command line in a terminal session. combine a few of these with some batch scripts, and you could save yourself some time.

use winamp to manage your ipod

finally, there is an alternative to itunes to manage your mp3 collection on the ipod using winamp and this plug-in. i’ve hated using itunes, but it’s worked well so far. one thing i wish i could do with itunes was to have a list that syncs with the ipod and one for all other mp3′s. it looks as if you can with this plug-in and winamp. there are options to put certain albums onto the ipod. this comes in handy since i don’t want to put my entire mp3 collection onto the ipod.

Some vendors do not release specifications of the hardware or provide a linux driver for their wireless network cards. This project provides a linux kernel module that loads and runs Ndis (Windows network driver API) drivers supplied by the vendors.

i haven’t had a chance to see if this really works or not. i recently tried to install ubuntu on my machine, but quickly found out that my broadcom 10/100 card was the main cause of ubuntu not installing properly. guess it’s time to try another flavor.

windows server 2003 sp1 admin tools pack

microsoft has released the administration tools pack for windows server 2003 sp1. before you install it, read knowledge base article 304718 for known issues and the write-up. also, make sure you uninstall any previous versions before you install this version onto your server.

run iPod diagnostics

to enter the diagnostic mode on the iPod, first of all reset it. when you see the apple logo, hold down next, previous, and select. When the apple logo goes away, release the buttons. you’ll see the coolest thing ever: a backwards apple logo, as if you were inside the iPod looking out.
