Microsoft has released a Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor for you to see if your PC is compatible with Windows Vista. Unfortunately, mine wasn’t compatible. If I wanted to take advantage of the Aero features, I’d have to upgrade the video card on the laptop.
one of things that has always irked me about windows is having to select a program everytime i run across a file with no extension. i’ve always wanted to have some default program associated with those files types, but never been able to do it. now there is a way to do it.
here is one of the better guides to help speed up your windows machine that i’ve run across in some time now. the first step involves turning off certain services, and i would be careful when turning off the ones recommended. chances are you won’t need them, but always double check first. read this guide for a definition of each service before you turn any off. there are also a couple of steps where you need to edit the registry. if you aren’t comfortable making these changes, i wouldn’t recommend doing it. if you do make any changes, make sure to backup your registry first.
one thing that annoys me about windows is it’s auto-restart after a windows update. i would like to decide when to restart my machine, not ms. here is a registry fix to prevent windows from restarting on its own after an update. just download the file, and run it.

microsoft has released the administration tools pack for windows server 2003 sp1. before you install it, read knowledge base article 304718 for known issues and the write-up. also, make sure you uninstall any previous versions before you install this version onto your server.
this simulator would have been great had it been around when xp came out, but regardless it’s a really good idea. i haven’t tried it out yet, but the idea of a simulator is great especially for someone looking to learn how to install windows. hopefully they’ll make simulators for the future versions of windows and other operating systems as well.
ever needed help writing batch files? maybe you want to learn how to write one. here is a site that offers help on how to write batch files along with various examples on how it can be used. i’ve already referred to it a couple of times because i simply forgot how to accomplish what i was trying to get done. then again, that’s what the internet is for right? :)
mainstream support of windows 2000 is ending on june 30. this is a good time to migrate over to windows xp for your client, or windows server 2003 for your server. according to the article, microsoft is pushing its file server migration toolkit and application compatibility toolkit to help ease the transition over to the new systems.
processlibrary.com is an excellent website for finding detailed information about the processes that run on your computer (i.e. explorer.exe). they also have a dll search option. i’ve bookmarked this site for future use.
